Businesses in the Turks and Caicos Islands can connect an approved local eCommerce merchant account to a website by obtaining Powertranz/FAC credentials from a participating institution and configuring them in Genius Checkout. The Powertranz merchant map lists Scotiabank, RBC Royal Bank, and CIBC Caribbean for the market.

A real Genius Checkout Test Store gateway screen showing separate regional payment routes Genius Checkout keeps each approved gateway as a distinct route. The merchant activates only the services and environments provisioned for its own account.

For villa rentals, resorts, excursions, charters, and destination services, the hard part is usually not adding a payment button. It is defining deposits, balances, cancellations, card-on-file consent, and reconciliation before the first guest pays.

Local routes shown by Powertranz

Institution Confirm with the merchant team
Scotiabank Turks and Caicos Current eCommerce product, API or hosted mode, currencies, settlement account, and gateway credentials
RBC Royal Bank FAC/Powertranz profile, Direct or HPP access, 3-D Secure, refunds, and recurring permissions
CIBC Caribbean eCommerce approval, card brands, enabled operations, technical contacts, and credentials

Powertranz's map establishes the directory relationship. It does not mean every institution offers the same commercial package or that an existing business account is automatically eligible.

Design the payment policy around the guest journey

A villa booking often has at least three financial moments: reservation deposit, balance before arrival, and a possible post-booking adjustment. An excursion may charge immediately but allow cancellation for weather. A charter operator may need a deposit, signed terms, and a manually approved balance.

Write down which action happens at each stage:

  • Authorize & Capture: charge now and record the payment against the booking.
  • Authorize Only: hold funds, then capture later if the bank and business process permit it.
  • Card on file: save a provider token after consent for a later balance or approved incidental charge.
  • Payment link: send a secure request tied to a booking or invoice when a full shopping cart is unnecessary.

Never describe a stored card as permission to charge any future amount. The terms, customer consent, and gateway capability must support the later transaction.

Decide between Direct and HPP

Powertranz Direct keeps the buyer in the Genius Checkout experience through card entry and is the route to evaluate when saved cards or subscriptions are required. Those features still depend on tokenization being enabled for the merchant profile.

Powertranz HPP redirects the guest to a provider-hosted card page. It is a practical choice for many reservation sites, but the website must allow a top-level redirect. Trying to force the hosted page into an iframe can lead to a blank or blocked payment step.

Ask for the mode explicitly. HPP credentials normally include PageSet and PageName in addition to Merchant ID and processing password.

Build a clean credential handoff

The institution or gateway onboarding team should provide:

  • Separate test and live credentials.
  • Approved transaction currencies and settlement details.
  • The correct portal label, especially where older material still says First Atlantic Commerce or FAC.
  • 3-D Secure settings.
  • Refund, void, and capture permissions.
  • Tokenization and recurring-payment status.
  • HPP PageSet and PageName when applicable.

An online-banking login is not a processing password. Store both environments in a password manager and give access only to staff who maintain payments.

Use Genius Checkout with the reservation or selling system

Configure the matching test gateway, complete a controlled payment, and then connect the channel the business uses:

  • A WordPress accommodation or tour site can use WooCommerce.
  • A sales team using funnels and follow-up automation can use HighLevel.
  • A compact catalogue embedded into an existing site can use Ecwid.
  • Deposits and bespoke quotes can use payment links and QR codes.
  • A reservation platform built for the property can use a supported custom API connection.

Genius Checkout carries the approved gateway into those channels while keeping each order and payment attempt distinct. A failed deposit remains a failed transaction; a later retry creates a new transaction and a new gateway-facing order identifier.

A useful pre-launch exercise

Create one test booking with a deposit and one with full payment. Cancel one from the hosted page. Decline one intentionally with a provider-approved test card. If a balance will be charged later, obtain consent and test the tokenized follow-up transaction. Then issue a refund and compare the website, Genius Checkout timeline, Powertranz record, and bank report.

Also test a mobile browser on hotel Wi-Fi and cellular data. Destination purchases often happen on phones, and a technically valid page can still fail if a popup is blocked or a button falls below an overlay.

Settlement and reconciliation questions

Turks and Caicos uses the US dollar, but the merchant still needs the institution to confirm the transaction currency, settlement account, card-brand availability, fees, and timing. The daily process should match:

  1. Booking or invoice reference.
  2. Genius Checkout transaction and receipt.
  3. Powertranz gateway reference.
  4. Institution settlement record.
  5. Refund or chargeback records when applicable.

That chain is more useful than a spreadsheet containing only customer names and amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new website before applying?

Ask the institution what it requires. A clear business model, policies, and proposed payment flow are valuable even if the final site is still being built. Payment links may also suit early operations.

Can a guest pay from outside Turks and Caicos?

International card acceptance depends on the approved facility, card brands, fraud rules, and currency configuration. Confirm those points with the institution and test representative guest markets.

Can the same account collect deposits and recurring membership fees?

Only if the merchant profile, customer consent, tokenization, and recurring permissions support both use cases. Do not infer recurring capability from a successful booking deposit.
